How much will it cost?

The cost of a kitten seems to be something few breeders advertise. In general, you can expect to pay £300-£400 for a pet- or show-quality kitten (Maine Coon or Asian), although this will vary by breeder. A breeding queen (female kitten bought for breeding) will cost up to 50% more, and a stud boy (male kitten bought for breeding) will cost at least 100% more. However, if you have not owned a pedigree cat before, a breeder is unlikely to sell you your first kitten for breeding.

Contrary to popular opinion, these fees do not make the breeder a huge profit! Breeder costs can include shows (entry fees, travel costs and accommodation); stud fees; kittening pens; food, water & litter for kittens, and inoculations. Cat breeding is generally an expensive hobby rather than a profitable enterprise.

Other initial costs include a sturdy scratching post (vital for the wellbeing of your cat and your furniture). You should expect to pay upwards of £60 for a good-quality post. See my Links page for more details. Minor costs include a grooming comb, litter, litter scoop, litter tray, toys, food and so on.
